The Battle of Mohács in 1526 effectively ended the medieval Kingdom of Hungary. Louis II died fleeing the field — drowned in a marsh, by most accounts — and within decades the territory was partitioned between Ottoman administration, Transylvania, and Habsburg control. The national memorial site at Mohács was formally designated in 1976, on the 450th anniversary of the battle.
This commemorative was issued as a non-precious circulation-quality piece, part of the MNB's ongoing program of themed 2000 forint coins that began in the 2010s to mark historical and cultural sites.
