The Jack Pine belongs to the RCM's ongoing series of large-format gold issues celebrating Canadian landscapes through the work of Group of Seven artists, this particular coin drawing from Lawren Harris's stark, almost geometrically simplified rendering of the northern Ontario tree. Harris's relationship with the Jack Pine as subject matter was itself a deliberate counterpoint to Tom Thomson's more celebrated 1916 canvas — Harris wanted austerity where Thomson had warmth.
Mintage for the 2002 issue was capped at 7,961 pieces.
