Additional information

Issued to mark Josip Broz Tito's 85th birthday, this coin arrived at a moment when Yugoslavia's federal structure was already under quiet strain — Tito had spent much of the mid-1970s engineering the 1974 constitution, a document deliberately designed to prevent any single republic from dominating after his death. The birthday commemoration was as much political projection as celebration. He would die three years later, in May 1980, and the constitutional machinery he built lasted just over a decade before the federation collapsed entirely.
