| Additional information |
The "Year of the Buffalo" designation places this issue in the Lunar New Year series that smaller national mints and issuing authorities have used since the early 2000s to capture collector demand from East Asian markets — demand that has essentially nothing to do with The Gambia itself. The Central Bank of Gambia has issued a succession of these thematic gold pieces, with the actual minting contracted to private minting houses in Europe.
At 0.566 g, the planchet is fractional by any measure, placing it in the same commercial tier as "mini gold" issues produced for gift and novelty buyers rather than bullion investors.
