Obverse description Full-length figure of Juan Santamaría, Costa Rica's national hero, depicted standing atop a field cannon in a dynamic pose, raising a torch aloft in his right hand while holding a rifle in his left. The heroic figure is rendered in high relief against a polished field, commemorating his celebrated act of valor at the Battle of Rivas in 1856. The circular legend JUAN SANTAMARIA - HEROE NACIONAL curves along the upper periphery, flanked by a beaded border, while the date 1856 appears to the right. The denomination 200 COLONES is boldly inscribed in two lines across the lower portion of the field.
