Reverse description The central device portrays Juan Santamaría, Costa Rica's national hero, depicted in full figure standing beside a field cannon, his right arm raised aloft brandishing a flaming torch while his left hand grips a rifle. The heroic composition commemorates his celebrated act of valor during the Battle of Rivas in 1856. The circular legend JUAN SANTAMARIA - HEROE NACIONAL arcs along the upper periphery, with the commemorative date 1856 inscribed vertically along the right border. The denomination 200 COLONES is prominently rendered in large numerals and lettering across the lower field. A continuous beaded border frames the entire design, which is struck in high relief against a polished proof surface.
