Issued to mark the 150th anniversary of Central American independence from Spain, declared on September 15, 1821 — a date shared by Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica, making the occasion a regional rather than strictly Salvadoran one. El Salvador's gold coinage of this period was minted almost entirely for commemorative and export purposes; the colón had long ceased to circulate in precious metal form by any practical measure.
KM#146 was produced in limited quantities and largely absorbed by collectors and foreign buyers rather than domestic circulation.
