Ukraine's debut at the Summer Olympics came in Atlanta in 1996, the first Games the country entered as an independent nation following the Soviet dissolution. The timing was tight: independence was declared in August 1991, and the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine received IOC recognition only in 1993, leaving a narrow window to build a team infrastructure from scratch. Ukrainian athletes had competed for the USSR for decades — now they marched under their own flag for the first time in Atlanta, winning 23 medals.
The copper-nickel composition was deliberate budget policy; a silver version was struck simultaneously for collectors, making the base-metal issue the circulation-tier commemorative.
