Issued to mark the beatification ceremony held in Rome on May 1, 2011 — a date Benedict XVI chose deliberately, Divine Mercy Sunday, a feast John Paul II himself had introduced to the universal Church in 2000. The pad-printing technique applied to this coin was among the earlier uses of that process by the NBP, allowing photographic-quality color reproduction directly onto the struck surface rather than through enamel inlay.
