Grottger died of tuberculosis in 1867 at thirty years old, having spent much of his short career in Kraków and Vienna producing cycle drawings — Lithuania, Polonia, War, Mourning — that became the defining visual record of Polish suffering under the January Uprising of 1863. He never saw an independent Poland. The NBP issued this coin as part of its long-running series honoring Polish artists and intellectuals, a program that began in earnest after 1989 and has since covered figures across literature, science, and the fine arts.
The .925 standard used here matches the specification adopted across most of the NBP's collector silver output from the mid-2000s onward.
