| Obverse description | Central design features a detailed relief depiction of the Taedong Gate (East Gate) of Pyongyang, rendered in a traditional Korean architectural style with characteristic multi-tiered pagoda roofing and stone ramparts. North Korea has issued commemorative coinage for foreign hard currency since the 1970s, a program designed entirely to extract convertible currency from overseas collectors rather than to serve any domestic monetary function. These pieces never circulated inside the DPRK.
