| Obverse description | Central design features a detailed relief depiction of the Taedong Gate (East Gate) of Pyongyang, rendered in a traditional Korean architectural style with characteristic multi-tiered pagoda roofing and stone ramparts. The gate is shown in three-quarter perspective, with decorative vegetation visible at the base. The circular legend in Hangul script surrounds the design along the upper rim, reading the full name of the issuing institution. The denomination '20 원' appears in large Hangul numerals at the bottom of the field. |

North Korea has issued commemorative coinage for foreign hard currency since the 1970s, a program designed entirely to extract convertible currency from overseas collectors rather than to serve any domestic monetary function. These pieces never circulated inside the DPRK.
