North Korea has issued commemorative coinage for foreign hard currency since the 1970s, a program designed entirely to generate export income rather than circulate domestically. This brass zodiac piece is part of that series, produced for the collector export market at a time when the DPRK's hard currency operations were under increasing international sanctions pressure following the country's first nuclear test in 2006.
