Reverse description The reverse features a colourised naturalistic depiction of a goat or sheep standing in profile to the left, set against a rocky landscape with a coniferous tree to the right rendered in green tones; the animal itself is colourised in warm brown hues. Above the central device, a rectangular cartouche contains the Chinese seal-script character 未 (Wei), the eighth Earthly Branch associated with the Goat in the Chinese zodiac. Along the lower periphery, a series of years corresponding to the Year of the Goat in the twelve-year zodiac cycle is inscribed in Latin numerals: 1967-1979-1991-2003-2015-2027.

Additional information

North Korea's zodiac commemorative program has been prolific since the 1990s, producing coins primarily for the hard-currency export market rather than domestic circulation — ordinary North Koreans have no meaningful access to foreign-trade collectibles of this kind. The program exists almost entirely to generate foreign exchange.

KM#1257 is one of several brass issues from the 2010 zodiac series, a year in which the DPRK mint released multiple denominations tied to the lunar calendar cycle.
