Obverse description Central motif depicts the Taedong Gate (East Gate) of Pyongyang, rendered in fine relief with its characteristic multi-tiered traditional Korean pavilion architecture set upon a stone podium, with stylized rockwork and foliage in the lower field. The circular legend in Hangul script arcs around the upper periphery, reading the full name of the issuing authority. The denomination '20 원' appears in the lower exergue below the gate structure.

Reverse description Central field features a colorized full-body depiction of a German Shepherd dog, standing alert in profile to the left with head raised, executed in polychrome enamel over the brass surface with naturalistic tan, black, and brown tones. The dog stands upon a rocky and grassy ground in the lower field. To the upper right, the Chinese character '狗' (dog) is enclosed within a raised rectangular cartouche. The date '2006' is inscribed to the left field.
