Reverse description Central field presents the Hyonmu, the Black Tortoise of the North, one of the four guardian spirits of Korean and East Asian cosmology, depicted as a tortoise entwined by a serpent, both rendered in fine relief against a polished concave field. The tortoise is shown in profile facing left with the serpent coiled around its body and raising its head above the tortoise's neck. The name 'HYONMU' is inscribed in bold Latin capitals along the upper arc within the inner circle. The border features a continuous chevron or herringbone decorative pattern encircling the entire design.
