Obverse description At center, a detailed depiction of the Taedongmun (Eastern Gate) of Pyongyang is rendered in high relief. The legend 조선민주주의인민공화국중앙은행, identifying the issuing authority, arcs along the upper periphery. The denomination 20 WON is inscribed along the lower periphery in Latin script.

Reverse description The central field features a dynamic depiction of field hockey players in action, illustrating the sport to which the coin is dedicated. The English legend SUMMER GAMES 2008 arcs along the upper periphery, while the Chinese inscription 曲棍球 (field hockey) appears in the center field. In the lower portion, a vignette combines the Temple of Heaven in Beijing with the walls of Daesongsan Fortress (대성산성), which bears the sport's emblem and the date 2008, with the Korean inscription 대성산성 appearing above this architectural motif.
