North Korea issued a series of brass sports coins around 2007 aimed squarely at the foreign collector market — hard currency generation, not domestic circulation. These pieces were never intended to pass through Korean hands.

Boxing has particular resonance in the DPRK: the country produced multiple Olympic medalists in the sport during the 1970s and 1980s, including gold at Montreal in 1976.
