Obverse description Portrait vignette of King George VI in an oval frame at upper left, set against an intricate guilloche underprint in green and brown tones. The denomination "TWENTY SHILLINGS OR ONE POUND" is inscribed in large lettering across the centre, with the value numeral "20" repeated at upper right within a lathe-work rosette. The lower portion carries the date "Nairobi, 1st June 1939" alongside three manuscript signatures of Members of the East African Currency Board, with additional bilingual inscriptions in Arabic and Gujarati scripts.

Reverse description Central vignette of a lion standing in profile on an open plain with a mountain range in the background, enclosed within an ornate cartouche flanked by guilloche rosettes bearing the numeral "20". The entire design is executed in a warm brown intaglio print with intricate lathe-work borders framing the composition. The denomination legend appears in two horizontal bands above and below the central vignette.
