Reverse description The reverse features a rich color-printed design commemorating the 85th anniversary of Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Arkhipovich Leonov. In the foreground, a portrait bust of Leonov in his spacesuit helmet bearing the 'СССР' (USSR) inscription is depicted in black and white. The colorized background portrays a dramatic scene of a spacewalking cosmonaut tethered to a Voskhod spacecraft against a deep blue cosmic field illuminated by a bright streak of light, with an early Soviet satellite visible in the right field. The legend 'А.А. ЛЕОНОВ' appears in the upper left field, while '85 ЛЕТ' is inscribed in the lower right field.

Additional information

Alexei Leonov conducted the first spacewalk on 18 March 1965, exiting the Voskhod 2 capsule for twelve minutes — a feat that nearly killed him when his suit over-inflated in the vacuum, forcing him to bleed pressure manually before he could re-enter the airlock. He died in October 2019, the same year this coin was issued.

Transnistria, recognized by no UN member state, nonetheless operates its own banking system and has produced a consistent program of collector coinage since the 1990s, often targeting Soviet and Russian historical themes with an eye toward the Russian collector market.
