Obverse description The bank's royal arms vignette is centered at the top, flanked by the denomination numeral '20' in oval guilloche panels on either side, with three additional circular guilloche medallions arranged vertically at left. The promise-to-pay text and bank title are rendered in letterpress script across the central field, above the signature line authorizing the note by order of the Court of Directors. The charter reference 'Incorporated by Royal Charter 1746' arches above the arms at the top margin, and the note is dated 'Edinburgh' with the place of issue.

Reverse description The reverse is printed entirely in blue on a fine guilloche underprint, with a central circular vignette of a seated classical female figure holding a staff, with a sailing ship in the background, enclosed within an ornate lathe-work border. Two vertical panels of interlocking guilloche rosettes flank the central medallion on left and right, with the denomination numeral '20' appearing in dark ink within each panel. The entire composition is surrounded by a detailed geometric lace-pattern border.
