Eggolsheim is a small Franconian village, and Johann Kraus's cooperative store — "Erstes Gemeinschaftliches Warengeschäft," the first cooperative retail operation in the village — issued this zinc token as private scrip during the notgeld period following World War I, when small-denomination coinage had effectively vanished from circulation. Zinc was the material of necessity: copper and nickel had been consumed by wartime production, and official coinage in small values was intermittent at best.
The Menzel reference numbers suggest two catalog editions catalogued this piece identically, implying no known varieties between printings.
