| 裏面の説明 | Central denomination mark composed of two large X characters (representing XX, i.e. 20 nummi), separated by a horizontal bar, rendered in bold strokes characteristic of the Carthage mint. A cross appears above the denomination mark at the apex, and the Greek letter epsilon (ε) is visible to the right, serving as an officina or regnal year indicator. Below the denomination mark, the mint signature KRTG (an abbreviation for Carthago) is inscribed in the exergue. The overall design is set within the irregular, roughly circular flan typical of hammered Carthaginian issues of Phocas. |

Phocas seized the Byzantine throne in 602 by leading a mutiny of Danubian troops against Maurice, then personally overseeing Maurice's execution along with his six sons. His reign was short, brutal, and administratively chaotic — the Carthage mint, one of the westernmost Byzantine production centers, continued striking throughout, though output was irregular and die cutting at this exarchate facility was notoriously crude compared to Constantinople.
Phocas was deposed and killed by Heraclius in 610.
