| Obverse description | Crowned and cuirassed bust of Emperor Phocas facing, depicted frontally in imperial regalia with a nimbus or crown visible above the head. The effigy is rendered in the flat, stylized manner characteristic of late Byzantine provincial coinage from the Carthage mint. A partial Latin legend surrounds the bust in the field, though heavily worn on this example. The flan is irregular and slightly oval, typical of hammered bronze issues of this period. |
