Mauricius Tiberius inherited a treasury gutted by his predecessor Tiberius II, who had distributed wealth so liberally that the eastern frontier was left chronically under-funded. The Balkan situation was, if anything, worse — Avar and Slavic incursions were dismantling Byzantine control north of the Danube throughout this reign. The Thessalonica mint, operating intermittently and under real logistical pressure, produced small module nummi of notoriously inconsistent fabric during these decades.
MIB distinguishes the 112D and 113D varieties by officina and regnal year markings, though heavily worn specimens frequently resist clean attribution between the two.
