Obverse description Facing helmeted and cuirassed bust of Emperor Justinian I in military attire, rendered in the frontal Byzantine imperial style. The emperor holds a globus cruciger in his right hand and supports a decorated shield with his left arm. A cross appears in the right field. The surrounding legend in Latin identifies the emperor by his full imperial titulature. The design reflects the standardized military portrait iconography established in the early Byzantine period.
