The word ANNO is arranged vertically between the two letters, with individual characters placed in the interstices. The regnal year XXXI appears in the exergue, identifying the issue as struck in the 31st year of Justinian I's reign (557-558 AD). The design is stark and functional, with no decorative border elements visible on this example due to wear and flan irregularity. This reverse type is characteristic of the Rome mint's half-follis production under Justinian I. |
