Obverse description Facing helmeted and cuirassed bust of Emperor Justinian I in three-quarter view, depicted in imperial military dress. The emperor holds a globus cruciger in his right hand and a decorated shield in his left, with a cross positioned in the right field. The portrait is rendered in the frontal Byzantine style characteristic of sixth-century Constantinopolitan issues, with bold, stylized facial features. The imperial legend encircles the bust in Latin capitals within the border.
