Obverse description Facing helmeted and cuirassed bust of Emperor Justinian I in three-quarter view, rendered in the frontal Byzantine imperial style. The emperor holds a globus cruciger in his right hand and a decorated shield in his left, the shield visible at the left side of the bust. A cross appears in the upper right field. The imperial legend encircles the bust, identifying the emperor by his full titulature. The portrait reflects the standardized, hieratic aesthetic characteristic of mid-sixth-century Byzantine bronze coinage.
