| Obverse description | Frontal bust of Emperor Justin II, helmeted and cuirassed, facing the viewer directly in the rigid, hieratic style characteristic of middle Byzantine coinage. The emperor wears a plumed helmet with a crest and cheekpieces, and a cuirass with military dress visible at the shoulders. A shield is held to the left and a globus cruciger or spear appears to the right, emblems of imperial authority. The surrounding legend reads DN IVSTINVS PP AV, identifying the emperor as Dominus Noster Justinus Perpetuus Augustus. The flan is irregular and slightly ragged at the edges, typical of hammered provincial issue. |
