| Reverse description | An incuse square frames the design, with the ethnic inscription ΣΥΡΑ arranged in the four quarters of the square, one letter per quarter. At the centre of the incuse square, within a small circular incuse, appears a female head facing left, identified as Arethusa or a nymph, adorned with a necklace, rendered in delicate relief. The incuse technique, combining a recessed square with a countersunk central circle, is characteristic of early Sicilian coinage influenced by Pythagorean metrology and the die-cutters of the Dionysian mint. |
