The "Great Offensive" — Büyük Taarruz — was the Turkish army's final push in August 1922 that shattered Greek lines in Anatolia and effectively ended the Greco-Turkish War. Launched on August 26, it broke through at Afyonkarahisar and collapsed the entire Greek front within days. By September 9, Turkish forces had retaken İzmir, ending three years of conflict that had followed directly from the 1919 Paris Peace Conference's territorial arrangements.
Darphane issued this coin as part of a broader centenary commemorative program marking the events of 1922. Mintage figures for the series were tightly controlled.
