Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse features a devotional representation of the Virgin Mary (Madonna) tenderly holding the Infant Christ, rendered in a style reminiscent of traditional Orthodox iconography. The Virgin's veiled head inclines gently toward the Child, who reaches upward in an affectionate gesture. The denomination '20 ЛЕВА' and the date '1999' are inscribed in bold characters to the right of the central figural composition, occupying the open field. The design is executed in high relief against a polished proof field, emphasizing the intimate spiritual character of the subject.

Aanvullende informatie

Bulgaria's 1999 gold coinage program drew heavily on Eastern Orthodox iconographic traditions at a moment of acute national instability — the country had only just emerged from a catastrophic banking collapse and hyperinflationary crisis in 1996–97 that wiped out personal savings across the country. The Currency Board arrangement imposed in 1997, pegging the lev to the Deutsche Mark, stabilized the economy enough that the Bulgarian National Bank could resume commemorative issues.

At 1.55 g, this is a fractional bullion piece — the same specification as the standard 1/20 oz gold format used widely by European mints in the late 1990s.
