Ukraine co-hosted Euro 2012 alongside Poland — the first time the tournament was held in Eastern Europe — after a bid process that narrowly edged out Croatia and Hungary in 2007. The decision was controversial given infrastructure concerns, and both host nations spent heavily on stadium construction and transport upgrades in the lead-up. Ukraine's venues included Kyiv, Kharkiv, Donetsk, and Lviv, with the Donbas Arena in Donetsk opening just two years before the tournament.
The National Bank issued this coin a full year before the matches began, part of a broader commemorative program that spanned multiple denominations and compositions.
