Schedryk is the Ukrainian folk chant arranged by Mykola Leontovych in 1916 — exactly a century before this coin's issue — later adapted in the West as "Carol of the Bells." Leontovych was assassinated by a Soviet secret police agent in 1921, and the original Ukrainian identity of the melody was largely suppressed or ignored abroad for decades. The centenary issue directly reclaims that attribution.
