Bank Polski issued this coin independently of the Polish state treasury — a distinction that mattered enormously in 1923, when hyperinflation was consuming the mark-based monetary system. The zloty reform was still two years away, and these nickel groszy pieces circulated under conditions of near-monetary collapse, which makes survivors in any decent grade worth a second look.
