| Obverse description | Centered in the field, the Polish crowned White Eagle displayed with wings spread, rendered in a bold Art Deco style designed by Wojciech Jastrzębowski. The eagle faces right with detailed feathering across the wings and breast, clutching with talons below. The date 1923 appears in the upper portion of the circular legend, flanked by decorative lozenge stops, with the inscription RZECZPOSPOLITA POLSKA running around the periphery. The engraver's initials W J are incorporated discreetly into the design near the lower field. The overall composition reflects the restrained, modernist aesthetic characteristic of early interwar Polish coinage. |

Bank Polski issued this coin independently of the Polish state treasury — a distinction that mattered enormously in 1923, when hyperinflation was consuming the mark-based monetary system. The zloty reform was still two years away, and these nickel groszy pieces circulated under conditions of near-monetary collapse, which makes survivors in any decent grade worth a second look.
Struck at the Birmingham Mint under contract, not in Poland itself.
