The "Dragon of Breno" refers to a large Alpine salamander skeleton discovered in 1760 near Breno in the canton of Uri, which local inhabitants had long interpreted as the remains of an actual dragon. The creature entered Swiss folklore well before naturalists identified it correctly, and the confederation periodically revisited the legend through commemorative issues across the late 20th century.
KM#77 is one of several thematic silver issues from the 1990s Swiss commemorative program, a series that drew heavily on regional myth and natural history rather than political figures.
