Issued to mark the centenary of Georges Remi's birth, this coin was produced under license from the Hergé Foundation, which has maintained tight control over Tintin-related imagery since the artist's death in 1983. Belgium has a long history of commemorating its cultural figures in silver, but the Hergé centennial generated unusual crossover demand from comic art collectors with no prior interest in numismatics — driving secondary market premiums well above face value within months of release.
Two versions were struck: a standard collector issue and a higher-relief proof. The LA#BEM-13.2 reference distinguishes this as the proof striking.
