| Obverse description | The second royal seal of Afonso Henriques (1142), the first King of Portugal, is depicted at center, surrounded by an alternating arrangement of the seven castles and five escutcheons (quinas) as borne on the Portuguese national flag. The letters spelling 'PORTUGAL' are distributed around the design in spaced arrangement, and the entire composition is encircled by the twelve stars of the European Union. The mint mark 'INCM' and the date appear within the design field. |
