Liberia's late-1990s commemorative program produced dozens of silver issues bearing historical figures with no connection whatsoever to Liberian history, minted almost entirely for the collector market through foreign contract minting arrangements. Tamerlane — Timur — who died in 1405 en route to invade Ming China, never came closer to West Africa than Central Asia.
KM#791 is one of hundreds of similar Liberian-issued pieces from this period, struck in bulk for wholesale distribution through the Franklin Mint and comparable operations.
