| Obverse description | The central field displays the coat of arms of Liberia, featuring a three-masted sailing ship on the sea, a dove, a palm tree, a rising sun, and a plough within a shield, surmounted by a scroll inscribed REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA. The date 1997 appears to the left of the arms and the denomination $20 DOLLARS is inscribed in the exergue below. The outer legend reads REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA and THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE, the latter rendered in a curved band across the upper field. The design is struck in proof quality with a deeply mirrored field and frosted devices. |

| Reverse description | A half-length portrait of Tamerlane the Great (Timur) is depicted in the centre of the field, facing slightly to the viewer's right, clad in ornate armour and robes with an elaborate plumed helmet. The figure is rendered in fine relief with rich decorative detailing conveying the imperial stature of the Central Asian conqueror. The curved legend TAMERLANE THE GREAT arches above the portrait along the upper rim, while the denomination $20 appears to the right within the field. The mint marks FM and DE appear in the lower right of the field. The portrait is framed by a decorative inner border of stylised foliate and geometric motifs. |
