| Obverse description | The obverse features the right-facing diademed and draped effigy of Queen Elizabeth II as rendered by Ian Rank-Broadley, whose initials IRB appear beneath the truncation. The portrait is set against a richly textured background of concentric circular grooves radiating outward from a central zone filled with an intricate array of archaic and symbolic pictographs, including celestial motifs, eyes, fish, and abstract glyphs, evoking ancient inscriptions and astronomical symbolism. The legend ELIZABETH II • COOK ISLANDS arcs along the upper border in widely spaced Latin capitals, while the denomination 20 DOLLARS is inscribed along the lower rim. The inscription ARCHEOLOGY & SYMBOLISM curves vertically along the right field. The entire design is finished in an antiqued treatment that enhances the depth and relief of the engraving. |
