Oscar Peterson was born in Montreal in 1925 and went on to become one of the most technically formidable jazz pianists of the twentieth century, recording prolifically for Norman Granz's labels and touring relentlessly through decades when Black Canadians faced significant institutional barriers. The Royal Canadian Mint has issued Peterson coins before — a 2022 circulation quarter appeared as part of its Black History Month series — making this silver issue part of a broader recognition push rather than an isolated tribute.
The .9999 fineness is consistent with the RCM's collector-grade silver program, which moved away from .999 as a standard some years ago.
