Liberia was among the most prolific issuers of commemorative coinage in the 1990s, producing dozens of collector-market pieces tied to international events and celebrities with no connection to the country. This issue capitalizing on Diana's 1995 visit to Wales — one of her most publicized engagements in the years following her separation from Charles — was minted purely for the secondary market, never intended to circulate and never did.
Diana died in August 1997, almost certainly before this coin shipped to most distributors.
