| Obverse description | The national coat of arms of Liberia occupies the central field, depicting a sailing ship on the sea with a rising sun and palm tree, flanked by a plow and shovel below, all within a shield surmounted by a scroll bearing the motto 'THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE'. The date '1997' is divided to either side of the arms. The circular legend 'REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA' arcs along the upper periphery, while the denomination '$20 DOLLARS' is inscribed along the lower rim.
