Samoa has issued Chinese Zodiac coins since the mid-2010s, targeting the Southeast Asian collector market rather than domestic circulation. These pieces never enter circulation by design — the silver plating over copper keeps production costs low enough for high mintage runs sold through international distributors at a premium over melt.
The Year of the Monkey last fell in 2016, making a 2023 issue a retrospective release with no calendrical justification.
