Fiji's decimal coinage series was already well established by the mid-1980s, but the transition to the third portrait of Elizabeth II — Raphael Maklouf's effigy, adopted across Commonwealth territories from 1985 — required a reissue of the full circulation set. The 1986–1987 window reflects that portrait update rather than any monetary or political event specific to Fiji itself.
