Issued by the prisoner-of-war depot attached to the French army's 4th Region, this note belongs to the substantial body of internal camp currency produced across France during the First World War. German and Austro-Hungarian prisoners were paid for labor in scrip redeemable only within the camp system — a deliberate policy to prevent specie from reaching the local economy or funding escape attempts.

Le Mans hosted one of the larger regional depots, processing prisoners transiting through the Loire valley. Camp scrip at this denomination circulated hard and survivors are typically rough.
