Obverse description Central device features the Mexican national coat of arms: a Mexican golden eagle perched upon a prickly pear cactus, wings partially spread, devouring a rattlesnake. The base of the cactus is flanked by an encino (holm oak) branch to the left and a laurel branch to the right. The national legend ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS curves in a semicircle along the upper periphery in Latin characters. The eagle is rendered in the thick, high-relief style characteristic of this pattern variety.

Reverse description Front-facing three-quarter portrait effigy of Francisco Indalecio Madero, turned slightly to the right, occupying the central field. To the left of the portrait appears the mintmark Mo and the date 1981; to the right appears the denomination 20c. The design commemorates the revolutionary leader and president of Mexico in a plain, unadorned field typical of pattern issues.
