| Reverse description | A detailed architectural rendering occupies the lower portion of the field, depicting the facade of the Nożyk Synagogue in Warsaw, rendered with arched windows and decorative stonework characteristic of Romanesque Revival style. To the upper left, a stylized tower or post bears the Polish Underground State anchor symbol (Kotwica), surmounted by a flag, evoking the spirit of the Warsaw Uprising fighters. | Additional information |
The Warsaw Uprising of August–October 1944 was the largest single armed resistance operation of the entire German occupation of Europe, launched by the Polish Home Army in a bid to liberate the capital before Soviet forces crossed the Vistula. The Red Army halted on the eastern bank and waited. After 63 days of fighting, the Germans systematically demolished what remained of the city, and roughly 200,000 civilians were dead.
NBP has issued commemorative 2-złoty Nordic gold pieces in this format since 1995, treating the denomination as the primary vehicle for mass-circulation commemoratives. The 2009 issue marks the 65th anniversary of the uprising.
